Scrooge (1970)

The familiar story finds Ebenezer Scrooge (Albert Finney), a wealthy but notoriously stingy and misanthropic old man, haunted by the spirit of his late business partner, Jacob Marley (Alec Guinness). Marley, too, was a cold, heartless man and from the afterlife warns Scrooge to mend his ways before it's too late. Marley sends three more spirits to haunt Scrooge that evening: the Ghosts of Christmas Past (Edith Evans), Present (Kenneth More), and Christmas Yet to Come (choreographer Paddy Stone). Through them Scrooge sees visions of his own, wasted existence, which is contrasted with that of his long-suffering employee, Bob Cratchit (David Collings), an undyingly cheerful man beloved by his large family.

 

 

 

 



 

 

 

 

 

This film is wonderful. It recreates Dickensian London brilliantly and truly conveys the best of the Christmas season. The songs are perfect, fun, catchy with profound lyrics. Christmas would be much poorer without it. Scrooge the Musical is as essential a part of the festivities as Turkey and Christmas Pudding! Enjoy!

Frank Capra directs this heartwarming Christmas fantasy. George Bailey (James Stewart) has spent his entire life in the small town of Bedford Falls. Despite his yearning to see the world, George has always sacrificed his personal ambitions for the sake of his family and the local community, settling down to marry his childhood sweetheart, Mary (Donna Reed), and raise a family. However, when a huge amount of money goes missing from the savings and loans company he panics and finds himself preparing to commit suicide. However, he is shown the error of this idea by Clarence (Henry Travers), an angel who has been sent to Earth in order to earn his wings. To this end, Clarence shows George just how badly Bedford Falls and its residents would have turned out had he never been born.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

This heart warming and festive holiday favourite has touched and is loved by all generations.  A real Christmas classic! It's A Wonderful Life continues to weave it's special magic every year! :) xx

White Christmas (1954)

 

 

 White Christmas is a treasury of Irving Berlin classics among them "Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep," "Sisters," "Blue Skies," and the beloved holiday song, "White Christmas."  Two talented song-and-dance men (Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye) team up after the war to become one of the hottest acts in show business.  One winer, they join forces with a sister act (Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen) and trek to Vermont for a white Christmas.  Of coruse, there's the requisite fun with the ladies, but the real adventure starts when Crosby and Kaye discover that the inn is run by their old army general who's in financial trouble.  And the result is the stuff dreams are made of.
